Energy needs of the economy of the Republic of Belarus are satisfied mainly by using organic fuel, most of which is imported. Therefore, energy efficiency improvement is a prerequisite for sustainable economic development of the country.

Many of the largest industrialized countries have set themselves serious targets to reduce energy consumption. Belarus follows the same path, consistently pursuing a state policy aimed at the efficient use of energy resources. Belarus is carrying out systematic work to reduce the energy-output ration of the gross domestic product, to increase the efficiency of using fuel and energy resources, and to drive local fuels and renewable energy sources into the fuel-power balance.

The Department for Energy Efficiency is a structural subdivision of the central office of the State Committee for Standardization of the Republic of Belarus, vested with state authority and performing special (executive, control, regulatory and other) functions of the authorized republican government body in the field of energy saving.

The main objectives of the Department for Energy Efficiency are:

- pursuing a unified government policy in the field of efficient use of fuel and energy resources, including renewable energy sources;

- technical regulation, standardization and conformity attestation of energy-using products, works and services, control over compliance of technical and economic indicators of energy-using and energy-generating equipment with state standards, norms and requirements in the field of efficient use of energy resources;

- participating in the state expertise of energy efficiency in accordance with the established procedure;

- in accordance of the established procedure ensuring of supervision for:

- rational use of fuel, electric and thermal energy;

- participation in the state expertise of energy efficiency;

- implementation of measures for saving these resources and compliance with the norms of consumption of boiler and furnace fuel, electric and thermal energy by users and producers of fuel and energy resources.

More detailed information about the activities of the Department for Energy Efficiency, including the progress of projects for energy saving and efficient use of energy resources, introduction of the latest energy-efficient technologies and equipment, as well as methods for saving of energy resources  in household use is available on the official website www.energoeffekt.gov.by.
